Week 1 in Your NAACP

Week 1 in Review

Highlights from world news you can get anywhere. Even local politics and business information is online and available 24/7. Here are a few things you might be interested in but would not otherwise hear about -

  1. With the legislature back in session, you can listen to debate on the house and senate floor with this app on you iPhone - FStream - listen in for free from anywhere. There will be many bills that you will be interested in. Why not make it easy to track what our legislature thinks about them?
  2. Gladys and Jamie Scott are returning home for the first time in 16 years.

Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour suspended their sentences -- handed down in what the President of the NAACP, Ben Jealous, called the extreme and biased ruling of Judge Marcus Gordon that condemned each of the women to double life sentences for an $11 robbery.

Jamie and Gladys always described the moment the police arrested them as a nightmare. Not just for themselves, but for their family -- for their children.

So we united together. We fought the injustice -- just as the NAACP has done for more than 100 years.

I am humbled by revelations in Missouri of prosecutorial misconduct and actual innocence claims that are freeing long term Missouri prisoners after decades of confinement in prison. If you are aware of an injustice of this sort, take action now by getting involved, joining the NAACP, or supporting another person or organization that can.

  3. The 68th execution since 1989 is set for January 12. If you oppose the death penalty, are you going to tell anyone? Examine Rick Clay allegations of actual innocence.
  4. Last, but not least - you are needed to safeguard the civil rights of Missouri residents.
